Lumber or timber is wood that is used in any of its processes from felling through readiness for use as construction material for construction, or wood pulp for paper production.
Lumber is supplied either rough or smoothed. Besides pulpwood, rough lumber is the raw material for furniture-making and other such things requiring additional cutting and shaping. It is available in many species, usually hardwoods. Finished lumber is supplied in a variety standard sizes, mostly for the construction industry, primarily softwood from coniferous species including pine, fir and spruce (known as Spruce-pine-fir), cedar, hemlock, but also some hardwood, for high-grade flooring.
In the United Kingdom and Australia, "timber" is a term also used for sawn wood products, whereas generally in the United States and Canada, the product of timber cut into boards is known to as lumber. In the United States and Canada, timber often refers to the wood contents of standing, live trees that can be used for lumber or fibre manufacture, although it can also be used to describe sawn lumber that’s smallest dimension is not less than 5 inches (127 mm).
Note that the word lumberjack is used in the UK and Australia to refer to North Americans who fell trees, and so the word "lumber" conjures images of what North Americans call "timber", and vice versa.
A window is a transparent opening in a wall (or other solid and opaque surface) that allows light and, if not closed, air and sound. Windows are usually glazed or covered in some other transparent or translucent substance. Windows are held in place by frames, which prevent them from collapsing in.
Primitive windows were just holes. Later, windows were covered with animal hide, cloth, or wood. Shutters that could be opened and closed came soon after. Over time, windows were built that both protected the inhabitants from the elements and let in light: mullioned glass windows, which joined multiple small pieces of glass with leading, paper windows, flattened pieces of translucent animal horn, and plates of thinly sliced marble. The Romans were the first to use glass for windows. In Alexandria ca. 100 AD, cast glass windows, albeit with poor optical properties, began to be fitted. Mullioned glass windows were the windows of choice among European’s, whereas paper windows were cheap and widely used in old China , Korea , Japan. In England, glass became commonplace in the windows of normal homes only in the early 17th century whereas windows made up of panes of flattened animal horn were used as early as the 14th century in Northern Britain. Modern-style floor-to-ceiling windows became available only after the industrial glass making process was perfected. Evidence of glass window panes in Italy dates back nearly 3000 years.
